CE MARKING AND PRODUCT CERTIFICATION
CE-marking on products is evidence of their compliance with all applicable Community directives. Attaching the CE marking to the products is the responsibility of manufacturers or importing countries if they are manufactured outside the European Economic Area (EEA).
It should be noted that CE marking is required for the circulation and sale of products within the EEA. A product is only exempt from this requirement when there are no directives applicable to it.
IEP is certified to carry out many tests with a view to granting the CE marking and has the necessary means to carry out all tests applicable to electrical equipment and material, electronic devices and household appliances.
In addition to testing, the IEP helps companies meet other CE marking requirements such as the construction of technical files and the implementation of production control systems.

Sensible energy consumption in human activities is of extreme importance since these resources are finite, extremely scarce and unequally distributed. Therefore, it is very important to provide tools to support the decision-making process, that also allows the various economic sectors to effectively manage the energy resources used in their activities.

The ever-increasing exchange of products on a global scale, so typical of today’s markets, has led to a need to encourage trust between everyone involved – manufacturers, consumers and official bodies – in a technically credible manner, but which is also compatible with a reduced “time to market” of most current products. This, in turn, has led to the increasing adoption of technical standards in the European Union’s regulations and in the legislation of its Member States, which have converged on essential product requirements. As such, there is a need to assess compliance of electrical and electronic products in order to be granted the CE marking required in the European market, covering safety requirements (Low Voltage Directive), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC Directive) and energy efficiency (EcoDesign and Energy Labeling Directives), among others.
IEP’s laboratories provide manufacturers with a wide range of electrical and electronic product testing, based on European and international standards, for assessment of the compliance of these products.
These laboratories are accredited by the Portuguese Institute for Accreditation – IPAC. Thanks to the EA and ILAC agreements, of which Portugal is a signatory, the tests carried out by IEP are officially recognized throughout the world.
IEP’s laboratories are also recognized in Europe by ETICS – European Testing, Inspection and Certification System (ENEC, KEYMARK and CCA agreements) and internationally by the IECEE – International Electrotechnical Commission System of Conformity Assessment Schemes for Electrotechnical Equipment and Components (CB agreements). Thanks to these agreements, manufacturers that turn to IEP for the certification of their electrical and electronic products have direct access to the certification marks used in many other countries.

> PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of electrical and electronic equipment to operate properly and as expected in their intended electromagnetic environment, without causing electromagnetic disturbances that interfere with other nearby equipment.
In Europe, all electronic devices, whether powered by the electricity grid or batteries, must comply with Directive 2014/30/EU Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC) – unless they have some form of intentional radio frequency communication, in which case their electromagnetic compatibility comes under the scope of Directive 2014/53/EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED). These Directives (EMC and RED) aim to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment have adequate levels of immunity while not causing disturbances that are too high.
IEP’s laboratories have more than three decades’ experience of assessing EMC phenomena in electrical and electronic equipment, supporting manufacturers at all stages of the product development cycle, from design to their compliance certification with applicable standards and directives.

> EMISSION
Human exposure to electromagnetic fields is an increasing concern, both for health authorities and for the general population.
Current regulations on the protection of individuals from the health and safety risks that may result from exposure to electromagnetic fields, with a particular focus on occupational exposure, require assessments of this physical agent.
IEP’s laboratory has extensive experience in this type of assessment and is accredited by IPAC to carry out tests under the scope of ministerial order 1421/2004 and Directive 2013/35/EU (transposed in Portugal by Law 64/2017).

TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY CALIBRATIONS
In the area of temperature, IEP is accredited to calibrate liquid-in-glass thermometers and digital thermometers (electronic reading units, associated with thermocouple sensors, Pt100, etc.).
Tests are performed to determine the thermal profiles (stability and gradient) of various types of equipment, such as greenhouses, thermo-regulated baths, ovens, muffles, cold storage rooms.
Many of these tasks can be carried out on the client’s premises – in situ -, thus ensuring the lowest possible downtime.
